But she has remained in her congressional seat despite speculation that she would retire.

She was first elected in 1987, and had been Democratic leader since 2003.
She served two stints as speaker, from 2007 to 2011, and from 2019 to 2023.
Hakeem Jeffries succeeded her as Democratic leader.
